Headaches and migraines are never
welcome. Headache sufferers are usually very ready for tips on how to avoid them. Over 50 years of age, sufferers of
migraine, a primary headache, find themselves members of a global
community with migraine being a leading cause of
disability. (1) The practice of Dr. Tim Schneider has
some prevention tips and treatment relief ideas especially
for our Ottawa headache and migraine sufferers.
DIET AND WEIGHT
A healthy diet nourishes the body and the mind. Researchers
have described that migraine triggers appear
in many different forms - environmental, hormonal, and dietary.
A high-quality diet successfully helps manage
migraine. Further, and more expressly, women
with chronic migraine had a poorer quality diet than that of women with episodic
migraine. (2) A new study was
even more specific with the kind of diet beneficial to
migraine patients, specifically those who
are overweight. A very low-calorie ketogenic diet was revealed
to be episodic-migraine preventative. Effectiveness
was observed within one month of the diet change.
(3) The practice of Dr. Tim Schneider is not telling that any
of our patients start a specific
diet now! If a Ottawa headache sufferer wants
to look into a new diet, The practice of Dr. Tim Schneider is here to chat
and decide which diet (if any special one) is appropriate.
NUTRITION: Vitamin D
The same goes for vitamin D supplementation. Vitamin D deficiency has been found
in 45% to 100% of migraine sufferers. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant features
of vitamin D have opened its supplementation to considered inclusion in the care and prevention of headache and migraine.
One study reported that trial doses of 1000-4000 IU per day reduced
the frequency of migraine in addition to routine drug
therapy. More analysis needs to be completed,
but vitamin D supplementation appears encouraging.

individual Ottawa chiropractic patient and recommends
supplementation when appropriate.
CHIROPRACTIC AND INTEGRATIVE CARE
Headaches of all sorts – primary
headaches like migraine and tension-type headache – are common
complaints brought to the Ottawa chiropractor. Research stated
that complementary and integrative medicine - nutrition, movement (yoga),
manual therapy, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, massage,
biofeedback, meditation, and mind-body strategies – was beneficial.
In particular, spinal manipulation, chiropractic care,
some supplements, diet change and hydrotherapy are reported beneficial
for migraine headache. (4)
